Research Theme: Health in Ageing

 

This theme includes ageing well/ageing productively, health and well-being of older people, supportive environments, accommodation, workforce, retirement, wellness and independence. Far from being a negative issue, maintaining health in ageing is one of the most dynamic and relevant issues of our time. It will impact across all levels of societal behaviour and corporate and government performance. Examples of research in this area include:

Horner, B., Carey, M., Paduano, T., Raymond, M., Caddy, L. and Boldy, D. Feasibility study for the Melville Homes Trust in the City of Melville.(2006)

Outcome:
The development of a five-year strategic plan that will enable the Board of Melville Villages to make informed decisions about appropriate accommodation and services for the over 55s in the City of Melville.

 

Worrall, L.E., McKenna, K.T., Boldy, D.P. and Jervois, P.M. Evaluating processes and outcomes of age-friendly standards: the case study of public transport ARC Linkage with University of Queensland. (2004-06)

Outcome: - in progress.
This will provide Guidelines to ensure public buses are more age-friendly and will implement and evaluate a number of interventions.

 

Bartlett, H., Marshall, A.L., Patterson, I.R., Mar, C.D., Findlay, R. and Clarke, A. Increasing and sustaining physical activity levels of sedentary older adults by improving social support and links with local community resources. ARC Linkage with University of Queensland(2004-05).

Hay, D., Downie, J., Horner, B., Orb, A., Davey, M., Henderson, S., Vicary, D., Wichmann, H., and Hislpo, A. Intergenerational Research Program - Grandparents who parent their grandchildren. (2003-2006)

Outcome: - in progress
This is a collaboration across three Schools within the University and with a range of government and non-government agencies across three research projects to investigate the growing phenomenon of grandparents who parent their grandchildren when biological parents are unwilling or incapable of caring.
