Direct contact with the Freemasons of Western Australia continues to be with Mr John
Smith- Gander, past Chairman of the Board of General Purposes; and Mr Wayne Hibble,
Deputy Grand Master.
"The partnership between the Division of Health Sciences, through the Centre for Research on Ageing, and the Freemasons of Western Australia, continues to
be very successful. At present the Centre has and is pursuing additional partnerships to
further enhance the work being undertaken at the Centre.
In 2004, Barbara Horner from the Centre, Diane Coultrip Director of Nursing at Howard
Solomon and Howard Emery Administrator of the Homes for the Aged the Centre will be
working on a memorandum of understanding with the Howard Solomon Homes for the
Aged. This will support students from a range of disciplines to be able to gain experience
under the supervision of staff at the Homes. It will also provide a collaborative learning
and research environment for the staff of Howard Solomon Homes for Aged to become
involved in mutually beneficial research.
This is a great step forward, which will enhance the development of a Centre of Excellence
involving the Centre, Alzheimer's Australia WA and the Homes for the Aged becoming a
major research unit on Dementia and aged care. It is pleasing to note that such a
partnership has been formed in collaboration with the T.G. Smith Dementia Research & Development Unit.
The Freemasons of Western Australia are proud of the continuing development and
outcomes being achieved by the Centre and look forward to a developing partnership with
the Centre for Research on Ageing, the T G Smith Dementia Research & Development Unit, Alzheimer's Australia WA and the Freemason's Homes for the Aged.
It was a requirement of the original bequest that there should be practical outcomes from
both the research activities and in the presentation of programs/workshops undertaken by
the Centre.
This I believe this has and continues to be achieved."
